Experience Low-Income Families’ Lives
Poverty is a reality for many individuals and families. But unless you’ve experienced poverty, it’s difficult to truly understand.
The Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS) bridges that gap from misconception to understanding. CAPS is an interactive immersion experience. It sensitizes community participants to the realities of poverty.

Volunteers and Role Players:
- Participants in the workshop assume a family identity.
- The task of the families is to provide for basic necessities and shelter during the course of four 15-minute weeks.
- Participants experience poverty compressed into the real time of the simulation.
- Afterwards in the debriefing, they share insights of extraordinary vividness and intensity.

- Volunteers help set up and dismantle the event and facilitate the simulation.
- Role Players manage the simulated businesses and organizations in a community.
- Role players will meet on the morning of Tuesday, October 8th, before the start of the poverty simulation.
- Volunteers will be needed Monday afternoon and all day on Tuesday.
